Guest blogging isn’t simply about writing a post to share on someone else’s blog. If you want to be the guest blogger in high demand, you’ll have to do a few things – and do them well.
Here are six tips for becoming everyone’s favorite guest blogger:
1. Choose blogs that are in your niche.
If you write, look for blogs about writing – maybe even in your genre. Are you a foodie? Then look for food blogs. If you are a crafter, look for inspiring creative blogs. Are you an expert in parenting? Then find blogs about parenting. Good with money? Finance blogs would be up your alley.
2. Research the blogs you’ve chosen.
Know what types of posts the blogger is sharing. Review the topics she’s shared about in the past few weeks. Is there a topic you could provide additional information about? Look for someplace you could fill a void. Don’t try to write about the same point the blogger has recently made.
3. Look for the blog’s guidelines.
Every blogger has a style they use. The way they write their titles. Where they put the byline – if they use a byline. How many words are in each post. How many words are in a bio. Whether or not they use subheadings. Find out as much as you can about their style. And follow it. If you can’t find guidelines, ask the blogger if they have any.
4. Send your best writing.
Don’t send your average, every day writing to someone who has asked you to guest post on their blog. Send your best writing. This is your chance to shine. Your chance to gain some followers. You want to put your best blog post forward. Prepare it in advance, and edit it a few times.
5. Follow the directions for submitting.
Some people like for everything to be included in the body of an email. The post, your bio, and your headshot. Others prefer it be attached as a Word document (the post and bio) and a JPEG (the headshot). Be sure to find out which is preferred by your blogger and follow his request to the detail.
6. Be sure to submit on time.
When someone gives you a deadline, be sure to honor it. Some bloggers will take one day a month to schedule the posts. Others may work on blogging every day. If the blogger is the first type, you may miss your opportunity. And no blog manager likes it when their bloggers submit their posts at bedtime the night before they are supposed to go live on the site.
Guest Blog on BRMCWC
Here on the Blue Ridge Mountains Christian Writers Conference blog, we look for informative, helpful posts about all things writing. We enjoy personal stories about writing successes and challenges that make a point everyone can relate to or learn from. Posts are 800 words or less, preferably around the 500-word mark. We use subheadings to break up the text in our posts. And we appreciate submissions with Word documents and JPEGs attached for the blog post, author bio, and headshot. If you are going to submit a guest post, please include all three and email our Conference Manager and Blog Editor, Alycia Morales at alywmorales@gmail.com with BRMCWC Guest Post for Submission in the reference line of the email.
