Storytelling is the ancient art of entertaining others with a powerful story. What better way to learn the craft than a novelist retreat in the mountains. Through small group instruction and hands-on exercises from bestselling writers, the craftsman is able to focus on building strengths from challenges. Writers developing all levels of their career will benefit from one-on-one consultations, brainstorming, and instructions. Join us at the Ridgecrest Conference Center in Black Mountain, NC for hours of hard work, spiritual renewal, and building the craft of novel writing.

The Premise

This event will be a guided intensive where all participants have the opportunity to practice what they’re learning under experienced team leaders. During these four days writers can expect:

  • classroom instruction time
  • private writing time

Your trail guides are bestselling authors DiAnn Mills and Lynette Eason. Through small group mentoring and one on one appointments with each instructor, we will answer questions, teach, and guide you through the adventure of novel writing.

Also available for appointments and general publishing information is Director, Edie Melson.

Prior To the Conference

Writers will email DiAnn Mills – diann@diannmills.com – the first five pages of their work-in-progress novel. The submissions will be evenly distributed between team leaders DiAnn, and Lynette. There will be approximately ten writers per team. You will receive your assigned team leader’s name prior to the retreat. The leader will remove your name on the submission and replace it with a number to identify the submission. Your team leader will assemble all the submissions and email them to the team members for critique. These are to be completed before the novelist retreat. Everyone on the team will critique each other’s work.

Every writer is responsible for either manually or using track changes to comment/make suggestions for each numbered submission. Writers are to print submissions with those comments/suggestions and bring hard copies to the retreat.

(Detailed instructions will be sent to all who register)

During the Conference

During scheduled team/critique time, the team leader audibly gives HER critique of the numbered submission. When the timed session is over for that WRITER, team members give their critiques to the leader who will, in turn, distribute them to the appropriate writer. The leader is the only one who knows the name of the writer.
