Does being successful in the publishing world and fulfilling your dreams seem like David battling the odds on his way to becoming king?
Most of us are familiar with King David of the Bible. His story is in 1 and 2 Samuel, 1 and 2 Chronicles, Psalms, and many other parts of the Old and New Testament.
One of our first childhood Bible stories was about how David fought Goliath. Remember the five smooth stones and his slingshot? Maybe you’re singing the song now.
Have you ever wondered if David dreamed of being a king? Of course he did. Boys dream of being super heroes like girls dream of becoming princesses; and writers dream of becoming published.
Like David, we need to have a few things in place with God on our road to becoming outstanding writers.
- Submission: Have we submitted to God and to learning the craft?
- Servant’s heart: Do we know for whom we are writing?
- Security: Are we secure in our faith no matter where our writing takes us?
- Sacrifice: Are we ready to ensure our best is given to the writing project?
The following are seven ways a writer’s life is like King David.
- He didn’t take the throne immediately. He had much to learn
- He battled lions and bears to build strength, courage, and thus perfect his skills.
- His family probably didn’t understand who he was or what he was attempting to accomplish.
- He fought Goliath—the world of publishing—by using his skills and trusting in God.
- He faced rejection: King Saul, his wife Mikel, those whom he thought were his friends, and his sons.
- He made mistakes and had to ask God for forgiveness.
- David never gave up. He had hope, which means he waited for the Lord to fulfill His promises. What about you? Where is your hope and commitment?
How does your writing life compare to King David?

DiAnn, I love this comparison of yours between David’s journey to the throne and our journey to publication. Thanks.
Hi Sandy, thanks for your kind words. Sometimes we need reminders that our struggles have been shared by others – and we can learn from how they achieved success.
This is awesome, DiAnn. Thank you.
