Writers Must Use Their Words Well

By Tammy Karasek @tickledpinktam

All writers are given the opportunity to share a message for anyone who would come across the words they’ve tapped out on their keys. Whether the piece is a blog post, article or a book, the written words can be read by somebody, somewhere over and over and at any time. With this opportunity also comes the responsibility of what words we share.

Writers have a wonderful privilege to be able to speak truth and hope into others’ lives especially in our hurting world. We can share about the promises of God or even about how God has brought us through a difficult time. I don’t know about you, but I cherish encouraging words I’ve read in a book or even a post where someone has been transparent and shared how far they’ve come—with God’s help—from an uncomfortable situation of any kind. Words that go deep and soothe my soul and also make me hunger more for God.

There are many sentences in books I’ve highlighted or underlined that the writer shared which made my heart sing. Some writers have the ability to offer love, kindness and instruction within their words, which take us to a place of wholeness. When I come across those, I always thank God for giving those words, and the talent, to that specific writer who spoke to me in a way that got through my thick head.

Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.

                                                                        Proverbs 16:24 NIV

As we walk and work in the calling given to us by God, are we paying attention to what we say as well as how we say it? We need to be careful and make sure that the messages we write will bring glory to Him, not us. As writers—writing from a Christian worldview—we need to be confident that what we write will bring the gospel of Christ front and center to the reader.

When we write books, articles or blog posts, we can use words to encourage someone that we may never have the chance to meet in person. What a wonderful thing that is. Sure, we can entertain them, but at the end of our brief time together, have we carefully chosen words to point them to our Savior? Our words can uplift them, enrich their life or maybe even make them smile. Are we giving them our best?

What about those of us who also speak? We also have the honor to share the goodness of God when we address of room of people—whether there are four people or four hundred. Do our words point to Someone they want to know more, deeper or for the first time?

It doesn’t matter what you’re writing—or speaking—but the words you choose are very important. Are they edifying, encouraging or loving? Even when words are needed for instruction or correction, with thought and prayer, they can be delivered in a way that will bring another person’s spirit up. Chosen well, the right words could draw a person to want to know this God you speak of. And isn’t that the main purpose for our writing and speaking?

We need to pay attention to the words we use. We need to take our time and choose our words wisely when we share a message. When we sit down to write–or stand to speak—let’s ask God to help us share His words for those that will see them.

Oh, Tammy. You are so right.
Since God spoke the world into existence as in, “Let there be…” and there it was-
Since Christ came as the WORD Incarnate-
Using words to His Glory is a little like stepping into the Holy of Holies.
How careful we must be. Words carry so much power.
